Disgusting platform. Makes free offers to view posts that it locks, and after you jump through all of its dozen hoops to collect your information, it won't even let you view the post.
Substack sent all my login codes to Spam, I never saw them until they blocked me from logging in for 24 hours. I thought they were censoring me. Who would think to look in Spam for a log in code when... Ver mais

No Substack reader on desktop as of Feb 2026
Feb 2026 Substack discontinued their "Substack reader" (which worked great) on the desktop. It's now available only on phone, iPad and Apple TV. This is a huge disservice to their visually impaired readers who can't see to read on an iPhone or iPad. For as big and popular a platform this is abysmal. And a I also confirm their "billing" is an "F" as well.

Don't register....save your sanity and Inbox
The initial problem began the second I registered...emails..masses of them every day.My inbox groaned under the endless barage. When I unsubscribed..the emails continued. When I went to the website and unsubcribed, the emails continue. Today, another wall of emails....so I am joining the long queue of people who want out. If the emails stop, I will remove this bad review..I doubt if there's a human administering the bad reviews..too busy harassing and alienating their potential clients. You stop..I remove this review.
It sucks
It’s simply a social media platform where there are no readers for engagement. It’s so focused on writers that honest talk feedback as engagement is nonexistent. The amount of work required to appease the babies on there was not worth it
Lacks basic features and doesn't care about writers
Lacks basic features, analytics and now doesn't care about writers after launching a TV app.
Won't suggest anyone to use Substack to start your newsletter
Scam! Got charged after i unsubscribed
I had a very bad experience with this company. I unsubscribed from their newsletter, but I was still charged the following month anyway. This is already unacceptable, but what made it worse is that there is no real customer support.
Their “support chat” is just an AI that keeps asking for more details without actually solving anything. When I request to speak to a real person, nothing happens at all no reply, no follow-up, no solution. It feels like they’ve set this up on purpose to block refunds and complaints.
Very disappointed after being 4 years loyal user
I have been a loyal user for 4 years, but my recent renewal experience has been a nightmare. While the subscription page clearly lists the price as 70€, Substack is attempting to charge me 85€. To make matters worse, there is no option to cancel this pending renewal in my account settings. It has been trying to process this incorrect charge for 4 weeks straight. The automated support agent is useless and cannot resolve billing discrepancies. Extremely disappointed in the lack of transparency and human support.
Abysmal and Utterly Useless Support
Abysmal and utterly useless support. The chatbot's designed to just regurgitate specific lines and phrases. So no help at all trying to get a refund. Claim it can't find my email address, then it can't find the 'publisher' then it can't confirm that I've paid. All tosh, and no doubt designed to frustrate and ultimately and thwart the return of funds. I could not have imagined such a popular platform would be so dodgy when it comes to returning funds. More fool me.
Unresponsive AI loop hell
Substack "customer support" is an oxymoron. One star is too generous. Either there is none - it's all AI -- or the fictional "team" is in a basement somewhere deliberately making subscribers' lives miserable. It's a disgrace.
The two newsletters to which I subscribed and which were still charging me began telling me to "subscribe" for access. I got "previews" instead of full access. Again, I was already a fully paid- up subscriber. I went through dozens of iterations of "magic links" and codes, and was continually thrown back into the link-code-chat loop. The "chat" is a joke, and there is no human "team," as promised, if it doesn't work. Any employees being paid to support subscribers should be fired. The apparent irreversibility (and absence of human contact) of payment glitches that disadvantage subscribers is serious and remedied only by contacting your credit company.
I blocked payment on my credit card and filed a dispute which was immediately resolved in my favor. A week later I did hear from a staffer at one of the newsletters --having sent them an email about Substack customer support hell. He apologized and was going to take it up with none other than customer support to resolve asap. The mention of customer support gave me a bad feeling. I've heard nothing since. And if it's up to customer support, I never will. (Update: after the well-intentioned newsletter staffer said he would get the matter to "support" to fix the problem asap, the only development has been a vindictive lock symbol on the newsletter. That's "support's" response.) This occurred during December, 2025- beginning of January, 2026.
Poor
Poor, subscription has auto renewed. Sub Stack says you can cancel within 7 days for a full refund. I had done so numerous times through help but nothing is happening and now it isn’t even recognising my request.
There is no one to speak to and help feels like an AI bot and I have no way of getting a refund. Really awful customer service. I will be deleting my account and do not recommend.
GONE BUST
All I can get for my Substack account is a notice saying "PAGE UNAVAILABLE" - Can only assume they have gone broke/bust/AI'd themselves into oblivion - Good riddence!
Block your direct debit for Substack!
I canceled my subscriptions and my account. And yet, for two years now, a subscription fee has been deducted from my account every year. I have now blocked Substack via my credit card provider. Canceling your subscription and account is not enough! Block your direct debit for Substack!
Mandatory facial recognition? Nope.
Since substack introduced mandatory facial recognition for UK and Australian subscribers despite not being required to by law I no longer have any trust that this company cares nor respects the privacy or autonomy of its users.
If it continues with such policies it will face a mass exodus of users and will collapse.
Can’t unsubscribe total shit

impossible to cancel a subscription
It feels like subsribtion cancelation is hidden on purpose. I am trying to cancel a single subscription I have, it already took 20 minutes, and I still didn't figured out on how to do it.
Content Hijackers & Spammers with Zero Customer Support
These are content hijackers and spammers who will provide no customer support. Stay as far away as you can. It was my stupidity not having checked Trustpilot reviews here before launching my Substack blog last year. The reviews speak for themselves – I would never have launched my blog at Substack if I had known it was such a disaster. During the year, I managed to publish the paltry amount of 14 blog posts, the most recent 3 months ago. All of a sudden, last week, I noticed my Substack blog was taken offline, without a single prior warning or any communication from Substack. It's impossible to talk to anyone who would provide a specific explanation of what happened. They send you to an anonymous contact form, and after much struggle, you receive an email reply from what appears to be an AI chatbot, citing boilerplate bullet points for the account suspension, that cannot possibly apply to me. For example, they accused me of "spamming and phishing activities" across Substack, even though my Substack interactions have been close to zero due to time constraints. Outrageously, without any communication or a word of warning, they deleted the few replies to my readers I did manage to post below my own articles. They are now hijacking my content: when your account gets suspended, the Backup/Export feature no longer works. I complained about this multiple times, but there is zero response. Even worse, they flood you with dozens of newsletters every day to which you've never subscribed, and *because* your account is suspended, you're not allowed to unsubscribe from anything. Those toggles are blocked, just like the backup functionality. They accuse others of spamming, while being the worst spammers themselves. Substack is the worst of the worst, and they deserve early bankruptcy.
_Edit:_ After a week of anguish and minimal communication, Substack reinstated my blog fully (and backup now works, too), but without providing an explanation (or apology) for what happened, and no guarantee that it will not happen again in the future. I will keep my 14 published posts on Substack as they are, but going forward, I guess I will need to set up a self-hosted WordPress blog. I thought Substack was a welcoming environment that would spare me this technical step with its annoying software updates, etc., so that I can focus only on my writing, but that was apparently an illusion. I apologize for the harsh tone of this review, but won't be post-editing the original wording, as it at least illustrates the degree of anguish to which an author may be driven when they suddenly see their work of hundreds of hours disappear from the Internet without a warning or real explanation.

Last year I sent in a DONATION to Robert Hubbell's
newsletter. I did not request a paid subscription.
He later joined Substack, and yesterday I received a
$50 charge, which I found out was to recur MONTHLY.
This was pure FRAUD. I called my credit card company who said they would reverse the charge.
What a rip off!!! and Robert Hubbell is an attorney!!!
Spam and phishing emails is all you'll get....
If it's spam and phishing emails you want go ahead and create an account. These will continue well after you've unsubscribed and removed your account due to the poor security protocols implemented on substack.com. Tried reporting to support but seems like they are clueless.

I approached Substack for help getting back into my desktop account as I was locked out. Mobile app working fine and I was able to contact support via mobile app. The issue was I needed to change my password which can only be done through the desktop app, which I was locked out of!
No response yet. It's been over a week.
Disorganised platforms and poor customer experience
Their platforms and websites are very difficult to navigate - everything feels overwhelming and disorganised. The actual book club itself seems like a minor side activity while they constantly market authors and events. When I joined a monthly book club meeting, there were only about eight people attending. It certainly didn’t feel like “the first and largest self-help book club” as advertised. It’s also very unclear what you’re subscribing to. The unsubscribe button is hidden and takes ages to find. There’s no phone number or proper email contact, just an automated system that promises a refund but then says it can’t process it. Overall, this experience has been incredibly frustrating - I now feel like I need a self-help book just to calm my nerves, but it will not be one promoted by them!
